You Gotta See This

Mar142013 posted by Jodie and Jen 8 Comments

St. Patrick’s day is this weekend and the Irish are nice enough to share their holiday with all of us. So be sure to do SOMETHING fun. 🙂
Here are some great last minute (but sure to be a hit) ideas to check out.

Play this Roll-A-Leprechaun Game with the kids. They will love it!
(Or so she says…)

….

how about a beautiful Rainbow Fruit Cookie Cake for dessert?

….

(Love Sweet Love)

….

here are a few more ideas…
• for one family meal have everyone talk with an Irish accent
• cook a traditional Irish dish
• reward the person that has the most green on at dinner
• watch a movie about Ireland
• make leprechaun floats with green sherbet and 7-up
• or shamrock shakes with mint chocolate ice cream and milk
• have everyone finish this sentence –  I’m lucky because…
• learn how to make Irish Soda Bread

Do you have any fun family St. Patrick’s Day traditions?

Ha! Apparently the haters think it's funny that we dig up our old Irish roots this time of year. I'm bloomin' proud of my 1/64 Irish heritage!!!

The Roll-A-Leprechaun is like a Patty-O-Hangman game! That one's gonna be fun to play with the kids (our 'Lil Miss had to write a story about the little guys for school).

Oh, and that Lucky Charms crunch should've been photographed next to a TALL glass of milk,……gut bomb! So tasty looking.

I watched all four hours of the opening ceremony and I thought it was very good. entertaining, said a lot about the Uk history and included everyone. Possibly the best and most innovative Olympic Stadium torch I have ever seen.
I supppose I am a little biased but I was not disappointed and Mr Bean and Bond were brilliant.

Love the Olympics, but I thought the opening ceremony was pretty bad. Do people in the UK really love their socialized medicine system enough to justify celebrating it during the Olympics? Kind of weird and sad to me.

PLEASE find a way to watch the torch lighting bit – I cried. The music is WONDERFUL and the fact that it was the future generation that actually lit it as opposed to a celebrity was inspiring.

And yes, Vicki, we do love our "socialized medicine system". My 76 yr old father broke his hip a fortnight ago and is currently being treated fantastically well in a hospital by a host of nurses, doctors and other specialists who do a sterling job – many as a vocation as the pay isn't amazing at most levels. They have picked up on several other minor health concerns and he is also getting treated for those. The support for him and my disabled mother will continue after he returns home with daily visits from nurses. They do not have to be frightened about the cost or how to pay the bills – they did that throughout their working lives.
A few years ago, we watched a Morgan Spurlock documentary from the US that showed how quickly your life can become de-railed if you do not have access to healthcare. It was frightening. Our NHS is not perfect by any means, but at least even the poorest person in the UK will be cared for when in need, without an eye on how they will pay. I think many people in the world would envy that so it is right it was celebrated as part of what makes Britain great.

    Margaret C,

I'm glad that you love your medical system, and that your father is receiving good care. I wasn't really commenting on the merits of the system, but more that it seems like an odd thing to celebrate during an Olympic opening ceremony. I never realized that it was such a significant part of your identity as a nation. My apologies.

It's a misconception that people don't have access to medical care here in the US. No one is turned away from a hospital if they aren't insured. Our system certainly needs to be changed, but since I've seen how our government runs things, I'm not very excited by the thought of it taking over my medical care. And I don't want to pay the kind of taxes that many other nations levee. I'd rather have more of my hard earned money in my pocket to make my own decisions regarding my care. I'm just a small government girl at heart.

With all of that said, differences of opinion should be celebrated. There isn't one perfect way of doing things, and I'm glad we have the freedom to disagree.

Now back to watching the Olympics!

we just had teacher week too! They got a fresh coffee granita (which was the most expensive thing at 3.50 a pop, we bought two). Pack of Morning Glory seeds, homemade Robot cards, and fresh Apple Pecan mini loaf (made from left over apples rom the kindergarten field trip). We also sat for their classes while they went to their luncheon. A very satisfyingly great week!

I made leprechaun traps with the kids one year…it was so much fun! Once the kids were in bed, asleep, I took all their bait (pennies) out of the trap and made the traps look like they'd been set. Then I ripped a little 'escape' hatch from the traps and left one of those little glittered green hats you can buy at craft stores 'left behind' in the trap. The kids are almost 10 now and still talk about how they almost caught the leprechauns 🙂
