Monster Halloween Cookies

Sep152019 posted by Jodie and Jen Leave a Comment

Hi! I’m Meaghan from The Decorated Cookie. With a blog name like that, of course I had to choose cookies for Spooktacular September. These cute, oops, I mean spooky, monster Halloween cookies are so easy to make!

I’m no stranger to all things edible monster. If you scroll through all of my fun Halloween food, you’ll see lots of candy eyes starting at you. I just can’t stay away from monsters. They are so cute, even when they are trying to be scary. And they are the easiest Halloween treats to make. I whipped up some monster Oreos with candy melts and candy eyes. Or, use royal icing and candy eyes to make monster cookie sticks and simple monster cookies. (I’ve even done the fuzzy monster treat thing.) But this time, I’m all about the little fuzzy monster Halloween cookies.

Here, I use my bakery frosting, which is a buttercream frosting with some shortening swapped in for the butter. I tinted the frosting purple, orange, and green to decorate on small, bite-size circle cookies. Because you want the frosting to be fuzzy and 3D, it’s important to use a frosting with a significant amount of butter and/or shortening. Royal icing, usually used for cookie decorating, won’t work here.

When decorating with frosting, the cookies won’t fully set as royal icing does. I keep my cookies in the refrigerator before serving to stiffen the frosting design as well as possible so they keep their shape.

How To Make Fuzzy Monster Halloween Cookies

you will need: (affiliate links are included)

  • cut-out sugar cookie dough
  • 1 1/2-inch circle cookie cutter
  • bakery frosting
  • food coloring (Electric Orange, Electric Green, and Electric Purple)
  • 3 disposable decorating bags
  • 3 standard couplers
  • grass decorating tip, size 233
  • candy eyes in an assortment of sizes (mini, regular size, jumbo)

TIP: If you use couplers with your decorating bags, you can purchase only one grass tip. Simply wash the tip every time you change to a new color and easily attach the tip to the coupler.

How to make Monster Halloween Cookies

what to do:

First, prepare the cookie dough according to the recipe. Follow the instructions to chill it, roll it out, cut out your cookies, bake, and let cool completely.

Next, prepare the frosting according to the recipe. Divide the frosting and tint orange, green, and purple. Assemble three decorating bags with the couplers and tips. (If you only have one grass tip, assemble the other two bags by inserting the main part of the coupler in the bag and screw the ring on the outside of the bag without snipping the decorating bag’s tip yet. After you are done with one color, wash the grass tip, snip the corner of the decorating bag, and attach the tip with the coupler’s ring.) Fill each decorating bag with your three colors and close tightly with rubber bands.

Now to decorate!! Pipe fuzzy frosting on each cookie by holding the decorating bag vertically over the cookie, squeezing, then pressing down and up quickly. If you squeeze longer, the fuzz will be longer. Let the fuzzy icing fall where it may! Don’t worry if the monsters are messy! They are supposed to be.

Gently place candy eyes on the frosting in any size combination you like.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.
