Hey there! Nat here, from My Sister’s Suitcase. I’m super excited to share a fun and easy project that’s perfect for Back to School!
I am in love with the watercolor trend right now – are you? These watercolor notebooks are beautiful and cost less than $1 to make (so you won’t have to cut into your school clothes/shoes/supplies/backpacks budget!)
Anyone else in total denial that school is starting? My oldest will be in 1st and gone all day and my 4-year-old is starting preschool! To be honest, I’ll probably be the one using these to make all those endless lists to make sure everything is set for the first week!
Here are the supplies you’ll need: [affiliate links included]
- composition book
- watercolor printable (3 options you can download HERE)
- scissors
- Mod Podge
- foam paintbrush
- washi tape (optional)
First, I trimmed the printable to fit the front cover of my composition book. If you turn the cover over and trace the rounded corner you can get a perfect fit.
Next add a thin layer of Mod Podge to the cover of the composition book, making sure to get all the corners. Press the printable to the cover and smooth our any wrinkles. To make sure the cover doesn’t curl place a heavy book on top of the notebook for a few hours!
Now you can add some washi tape or ribbon to the spine for a finishing touch! I love that these could be teacher/friend gifts or for older kids going back to school.
Don’t forget to download the free watercolor printables HERE.
It’s always great to be here – thanks for reading!I hope you have a smooth transition back to school this year. Don’t worry :

I absolutely love this idea! Did you also apply the ModPodge to the top of the illustration once it was stuck to the notebook? I look forward to making a couple of these for myself!

I think we’re supposed to use the ModPodge as a glue, so put it on the cover of the comp book and then press the watercolor design on top of it.

These are so amazing! I just wanted to ask that if we want something else written on the sheet how do we print it out on the watercolored paper?

These are great. Thank you for sharing. I’ve used them as a print on the front of files for school. What font did you use? I’d like to make a matching spine label using the same font.
