today’s craft: hot rocks
(idea found here)
what you need:
* smooth, flat rocks
* crayons (with papers peeled off)
* pot holders
first step: heat rocks on a foil lined baking sheet at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes.
second step: using pot holders… lay rocks on newspaper or towels. then decorate with crayons. rocks will be HOT, so be careful. the crayons melt as they touch the hot rocks making the colors bright and fun. trust us. the kids will love this craft!
how cool are these?

Just stumbled across your blog! LOVE it! I've lived in vegas since 05! My daughter and her friends get together once a week and when they come to my house we do crafts! I am so excited to use some of your ideas!

Love, love, love your blog! Can't wait to use some of these crafts this summer with my girls! Will you be posting any crafts for younger ones? My girls are 3 1/2 and 19 months. Thanks for you great ideas!!!
I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now, and I just love it. In fact, I finally bought a big circle punch at Michael's yesterday. I only had a couple of smaller ones. 🙂
You remind me so much of my sisters and me. We live in Gilbert, AZ… all really close to each other. We each have 4 kids, the oldest is 9; the youngest is 3 months. And we get together to do crafts often. We just don't document it…. maybe we should. You're such an inspiration!
I just have to tell you that I am LOVING your blog. You have such great ideas and I am storing them away for summer when my kids are whining for something to do. I did your teacher's box with the goodies in it for my son's preschool teachers, too, and they turned out SO cute. Thanks for all the great ideas!
Fantastic idea! I'm so going to do this with my kids this summer!
Just did this today! My girls had so much fun with it. We plan on trying many more of your ideas! Thank you for sharing your wonderful creativity. I love your site and look forward to each new post.
Oh what a cute idea!! My kids are older, but they would still enjoy something like this. :o) I can't wait to do it!!

Got around to making these yesterday- my 3 & 4 year old loved making them!! Thanks for the idea. I blogged about it here http://ificould-ificould.blogspot.com/2010/07/hot-rocks.html
Fun! I love this because it would be a great way to use up those crayon bits besides making recycled crayons. Plus they would look lovely in the garden.
Great idea! This would be fun to do in Arizona- we wouldn't even need to put the rocks in the oven!
Does the chalk wash off like always?
Have u tried to do anything to protect them so it won't rub off?
It's crayon that melts onto the hot rocks and it stays on really well. 🙂 This is one of my favorite kid's crafts.

WARNING: Rocks can explode when put in the oven. Small amounts of water inside of the rock can expand and create a very dangerous situation. Please do research before posting articles that have the potention to be harmful to readers. Thanks -Dr P
