BOO Wall Hanging

spooktacular 2016

Hello eighteen25 fans!  I’m Landee from Landeelu.com and I am ecstatic to be here today as part of this awesome Spooktacular September event!  Yay for Halloween! I love a good Halloween craft and today I’m showing you how to make this cute Boo Wall Hanging that you can pull out year after year as part of your Halloween decor.  One of my favorite parts about it is how easy it is to store… roll it up and tuck it away until next year.  Easy!

But before we talk about storing it away, let’s learn how to make it, shall we?  🙂

Here are the supplies you’ll need:

  • white canvas or white denim cloth.  I cut mine 23.5″ long x 14″ wide but you can make any size you want!
  • Wood dowels.  Mine are 16″ long.
  • black craft paint
  • BOO vinyl stencil (this is easily re-created with your Silhouette or Cameo or you can purchase one in my Etsy shop HERE).
  • Embellishments.  I used orange pom pom trim and black ribbon.
  • Twine to hang, about 33″ long.

STEP ONE:  Pin hems on both sides of your canvas that are about 1.25″ wide.

STEP TWO:  Sew hems.  Quickly using a sewing machine, or not as quickly by hand.  You could also use Liquid Stitch or hot glue as well for a new sew option.

STEP THREE:  Tape canvas down to hard surface.  Place stencil on top of canvas and get it right where you want it to be.  Place a piece of tape at top of stencil to create a “hinge.”

STEP FOUR:  Carefully lift stencil (making sure the “hinge” stays in place) and remove backing.  After backing is completely removed, lay stencil back down on canvas (again, making sure the “hinge” remains in place).

STEP FIVE:  Using a credit card or similar object, burnish down the stencil onto the canvas to make sure it sticks well.

STEP SIX: Carefully remove the transfer tape from top of stencil, making sure stencil remains adhered to canvas surface.

STEP SEVEN:  Begin painting!  I used a foam brush and lightly applied a couple of coats.  I left mine a bit rough looking for a more uneven look but you could get it as solid colored as you like.  After paint dries, remove stencil.  Paint the ends of the wood dowels as well!

STEP EIGHT:  Embellish however you like!  I hot glued on some ribbon and the cute orange pom pom trim.  Rickrack would be darling too!   Then insert your dowels into the sewn pockets, tie your twine on to hang and you’re done!

Did you hem the sides too or are they just the cut edge? I’m wondering if the fabric will roll under or stay hanging flat and smooth like it looks in your pictures.
