pen pal kit

Jun132011 posted by Jodie and Jen 91 Comments

raise your hand if you love getting fun mail.
{me…me… jumping and waving both hands in the air!}
well…
this week we are sharing fun ideas that have to do with good old snail mail.
hopefully you’ll be inspired to make someone’s day with a surprise in their mailbox.
(and you never know… maybe they’ll send ya something back!!)
. . .
when i was a little girl i wanted a pen pal so bad.
like really bad.
there was one person willing to make my dreams come true.
that person was my grandma.  🙂
i cannot tell you how over the moon excited i was when i received that first letter in the mail.
i felt special.
i felt loved.
and i felt lucky to have such an awesome grandma!
{i am so thankful i kept this all these years. it’s so special to me.}

so i thought.
why not make a pen pal kit for my kids to mail to their future pen pals

anyone can be a pen pal:
  • grandparent/grandchild
  • friends
  • cousins
  • aunts and uncles
  • even people who have never met before
things we are including in our kit:
  • paper
  • envelopes
  • pens
  • stickers
  • stamps
  • a treat
  • a box to keep all the letters in. you may want to make 2 of these. 1 to keep. 1 to give away.
(for the box i just used a cheap pencil box and adhered the pen pal box topper with glue dots to the top)

we are also going to include this letter:
download letter HERE

. . .

so tell me.
did you ever have a pen pal?

Great Idea! My 6 year old daughter needs to work on her writing this summer and this is such a cute idea. We have talked about pen pals, but I haven't been able to get her to start writing. Maybe this little kit will do the trick in motivating her. Anyone out there want to be her pen pal?

I actually had 2 pen pals growing up…one was my grandma who lived in Missouri and another a friend I met through my granda who lived in Arizona. I lived in Michigan at the time. I now send secret pal packages to my neice in Michigan and after 2 years she still has no clue they are from me…I love that! Eventually she will figure it out and hopefully we can write to each other. I am in Ohio now and a fun way to stay connected. I did this with all my neice and nephews up there….

I had a pen pal for years. She is still one of my close friends. We started our pen pal friendship after meeting in person when we were 6. She is the daughter of one of my Aunt's friends. 42 years later we have shared major milestones, first boyfriend, getting married, birth of our children, divorce, marriage of a child, vacations a few times. I treasure our friendship and love her alot.

My 12 yo dtr. has a penpal in Ghana. He was the recipient of her Operation Christmas Child shoebox. We received a letter last year and they have corresponded since. They have sent small tokens representative of their countires/cultures. It has truly been a meaningful experience, not only for my dtr, but our entire family.

When I was in the 7th Grade, my teacher set our entire class up with penpals (Arizona to Holland). Her penpal was also a teacher, so our classes exchanged addresses and started writing. It was so fun as a girl crazy, pre-teen to get letters and pictures. My penpal was a pretty cute guy with blonde hair and blue eyes. I continued to write until he wanted to come visit for the summer. My dad put the kabosh on that idea. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

I had two pen pals growing up. One I knew (I moved, and we wrote for many years to stay in touch.),and one I didn't know. I believe I found her through a pen pal service for kids…maybe in a magazine or newspaper? You signed up for a pen pal, and they assigned you one. It was so fun! We even mailed each other gifts! 🙂 Sadly, I'm not in touch with either one of them anymore.

When I began college in 1995 my mother started sending me a letter in the mail once a week. This was before e-mail and internet was just getting going. I am now 35 years old and live 45 minutes away from her, but she still sends me a letter every single week. I love snail mail! It is the sweetest treat to open my mailbox and get a card or letter. Thank you for this idea! I think some fun traditions can be started by this post of yours!

This is such a great idea. I'm always bemoaning the loss of letters. I had several pen pals as a child, and I also wrote to both of my grandmas. I only have a few of their letters and I treasure them. What I regret is that I didn't keep the letters that my Mom wrote me through the years. My daughter and son were in college when email was available, so we have no letters to show for all of that time. Yay for your Mom for starting such a wonderful tradition.

Boy, you brought back warm and cuddly memories. My gramma used to send the best cards in the mail to me. She always enclosed a crisp $1 bill. I always loved the thought she put into them and the fun stationery she used. She passed away three years ago at 99 and my sisters and I have all dug up notes, letters and envelopes she sent us. I even found some of the dollar bills, clearly proving that her thought was treasured more than the enclosure.

I have had a pen pal for 42 years!! I lived in NC and she lived in RI — a boy at her school wrote my school looking for a pen pal — I answered him and ask him to give my name/address to a girl at his school. We still keep in touch – but now by Facebook or e-mail! We have met each other only two times over the years!

Okay this is seriously adorable. And your pen pal letter from your Grandma made me wanna cry. I love finding cards or even the envelopes to cards from my Grandpa because he would sign it the way we said it…"Love, Grampa" lol :o)
    Thanks for sharing this!

    This is a great idea!
I know boys would enjoy having new friends across the miles.

R is 7 and going into 2nd grade.
M is 4 and going into Kinder.
(I can help him with writing at first)
They enjoy playing outdoors and being with friends and family.
    We are in Northern California.

This is such a great idea! I had a couple of pen pals growing up and I loved it. I would love to have one for my daughters, one who will be 8 and another one who will be 6. I also have a 4 year old boy, that can't write a lot yet, but I'll be helping him. I know he would love getting letters though.
