yarn baskets

Mar242010 posted by Jamie 39 Comments

i made these a couple years ago with my girls. i saw the idea in my good housekeeping magazine.

materials:
a bowl

plastic wrap
yarn (i bought the variegated skeins)
a few bottles of elmer’s glue

1. turn a bowl upside down and cover with plastic wrap.
2. cut strips of yarn about 17 inches long. i don’t know how many we cut, but it was a lot.
3. soak the yarn in a shallow dish of glue (we added a little bit of water to ours).
4. pull out strands and drape over plastic-covered bowl.
5. after the bowl is covered with yarn, let it dry overnight.

6. remove bowl and peel plastic away from strings.

    Those are really cool!
When I was a kid, my mother would take string, dip it in starch and wrap it around a balloon many, many times. Once it was fully dry, she'd pop the balloon and you'd have this giant thready 'egg.' (I've tried it myself, but mine usually collapse. I guess I'm not patient enough to wait for 'drying time.')
I bet yarn would work for that, too!

What fun! So many kids crafts are so awful looking. We really need more like these. Although I must admit that I probably won't be making these with kids.

Wow this is a really cool idea. i love and it reminds me of when we used to use our pencil cases and elmers glue to make bookmarks and we could colour the pancil case which acted as a tray/shaper thing and then the bookmark would be all colourful – maybe that was just at my school though?
    thanks!

it looks like cotton yarn, I think that would make the difference, as it would soak up the glue better than acrylic and thus hold the shape.

The edges bother me… I want to make these with my grandchildren; will use kitchen cotton yarn or size 10 crochet thread, and for a more even edge, will have the kids use yarn/thread to encircle the bowl (around the bottom edge, which will become the brim) after their creative draping.

There were baskets or scenes done over balloons. Balloons were covered then busted and an opening was cut in front of it then removed the balloon and inserted grass or shredded paper and figures were added.

We’re going to offer this as a craft at our library and give the kids small flameless votive candles to put inside when finishied. The protoype I made looked really nice.

Does anyone know what plastic containers were used for these? It says to use 17 inch. pieces of thread so just curious what size the containers are. Trying to figure out cost of supplies to make 15 of these. Thanks.
