DIY Happy Halloween Sign

spooktacular 2016

Hi friends! It’s Marie from Blooming Homestead here and I am so excited to once again be participating in the awesome Spooktacular September event here at Eighteen25. I don’t know about you, but I look forward to this all year long. So many wonderful Halloween ideas all in one place! Today I am sharing how to make this simple DIY Halloween Sign.

DIY Happy Halloween Sign | Halloween Decoration IdeasHere are the supplies you’ll need:

  • spiderweb placemat (I found mine at hobby lobby)
  • Wood for sign
  • Chalky finish white paint
  • black paint
  • paint brushes
  • vinyl “Happy Halloween”
  • hot glue gun
  • scissors
  • fine grit sandpaper
  • spider (I found these glitter spiders at hobby lobby)

Step 1: Gather all your supplies and prep your wood. (I decided to repurpose an old sign so I had to sand it down a bit before I started painting.)

Step 2: Paint your sign with black paint and let dry completely.

Step 3: Now you’ll use the white chalky finish paint over top of the black.

Step 4: When your paint is all dry, you’ll take the fine sandpaper and distress the sign so that the black starts to show through on the edges and front of the sign. This adds a beautiful patina.

Step 5: Take your spiderweb placemat and measure where you want it to lay.  There are a lot of different “spiderweb” options out there but I liked this thicker mat. It adds a fun 3 dimensional effect to the sign.

Trim off the excess and hot glue it down.

Step 6: Now you’ll apply your vinyl Happy Halloween to the bottom of the board. It would also be great to freehand this on the bottom but since I have zero artistic talent I figured cutting it out with my silhouette and black vinyl would be the better option. (The font I used was bombshell pro)

Step 7: Glue on your spider to the web.

That’s it! Now you have a beautiful DIY Halloween Sign.

If you don’t love the look of the black and white, you can always paint your board a different color like orange or purple to make it really pop. I love the dramatic look of the black and white though.
