Crafting up things for Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite things to do. Who doesn’t love the chance to tell their family how much they love them? And plus, the heart is so easy to recreate and there are a million different ways to do it.
Today I wanted to share a fun little sign I made for my door this Valentine’s Day. I’ve really been wanting to try my hand at making some felt flowers and what better time than for Valentine’s Day? Felt is so easy to work with that this all came together without a hitch! <– not always the case, by the way, so I thought I should point that out. 🙂 Also, I should mention, this sign is based on the Joy to the World Sign I made at Christmas. I love that sign and am still currently sad it’s not up in my house right now. But I will say, my Valentine’s Day sign is making oh-so-happy! Love the 3D action the rosettes create!
Here is what you’ll need if you want to make your own Valentine’s Day sign:
- Wood plaque (found at Hobby Lobby), see instructions for painting it this way HERE. But basically you just paint it with white craft paint, allow to dry and use painter’s tape to mask off stripes. Paint over with grey craft paint and remove tape. Allow to dry and then sand edges lightly.
- Red felt. Cut about 45 circles ranging from 1-2 inches. Imperfect circles are best! Also cut a heart the size you’d like for your board. Mine is about 7 inches wide and 7 inches tall.
- Hot glue gun
- (optional) Red vinyl lettering saying “i love you” I used a font called Bombshell Bling.
First you need to make all of the rosettes! I will say that I was thinking this was going to take FOREVER but it actually went pretty fast. The best part is, imperfect circles and imperfect cutting when you cut the “swirl” makes your rosettes turn out better. Bonus!
STEP ONE: Cut a “swirl” into your felt circle, starting from the outside and working your way around to the middle.
STEP TWO: Roll “swirl” up, starting from center.
STEP THREE: Secure end with dab of hot glue to keep flower together. Some might say that you need to now hot glue this onto a small circle of felt but since we are just going to hot glue it onto the large heart shaped felt I didn’t think that was necessary.
STEP FOUR: Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat…. yeah.
Then I centered my felt heart onto my board where I wanted it and lightly tacked it down with hot glue. Then start gluing on your rosettes!
I added the red vinyl lettering because I have vinyl cutting machine and it was easy for me. I think it would be just as cute without it though!
I also hot glued some ribbon onto the back to make it something I could hang up.
If you just want it for a mantel or shelf then forget the ribbon and you’re done!
