Please Welcome: Liz from Lizzie Jane Baby

Sep82012 posted by Jodie and Jen 7 Comments

Hello Eighteen 25 readers!  My name is Liz and I blog over at Lizzie Jane Baby.  At Lizzie Jane Baby I share simple recipes, crafts, kids crafts and printables.
I can’t begin to tell you how {super duper} excited I am to be part of
SPOOKTACULAR SEPTEMBER
here at Eighteen 25!
Thanks so much ladies for allowing me to share today!

Today I’m going to show you how I made
Mr. Spider and his Web.
One night I was contemplating what kind of wreath to make for my front door for Halloween.  I was watching a rerun of The Office (which I do every night to wind down) and it was a Halloween episode.  I spotted this little guy during the show, and then the brain began working.  So much for winding down that night! 🙂  It proved to me once again, you never know where you might find inspiration!

The materials you’ll need are:
1 round styrofoam disk
BIG chenille pipe cleaners
google eyes
black spray paint
craft sticks
hot glue
wire cutters
ribbon
skewers
Command strips

First I made a web for Mr. Spider to “dangle” from.  I bought some big craft sticks and using my yard stick as a guide (I knew the width of my door was as wide as a yard stick), I began to layout my “web” design.  I just hot glued the sticks together once I had it all laid out.  Then I gave it a couple good coats of black spray paint.

I used some command strips on the back of the web to attach it to my front door.
Please excuse my yucky green table cloth, this is my crafting table cloth and is covered with all sorts of crafty bumps and bruises 😉

As you can see, it’s not exactly the same on each side, but you could make it the same if you wanted to.

Now onto how I made Mr. Spider.
I started out with a circular piece of styrofoam.  This one is almost 10 inches in diameter and almost 1 inch thick.  Using black spray paint, I sprayed the top and sides of the styrofoam.  (I made sure the spray paint said it would work on styrofoam.)

Then I found these big chenille pipe cleaners!  Have you seen these at your craft store?  I’ve seen them at both Michael’s and Hobby Lobby.  They come in 6 foot pieces, so I bought 2 of them.  Using wire cutters to cut my length of pipe cleaner, I shaped my legs for one side, and then using those as a guide, I cut the other side legs.

I used a skewer to poke holes in the side of my foam where I wanted my legs to go.

Then I put some hot glue into the holes I made and stuck in my pipe cleaner legs.

To attach my ribbon to hang it on the front door, I first used hot glue, but I was afraid it wouldn’t hold.  So I broke off a short piece of the pointy end of the skewer and stuck it through the ribbon into the back of the foam.
(I don’t want that guy to go anywhere!)

I attached a couple of big google eyes with hot glue to finish off Mr. Spider.

Then I hung him up on the front door using a small command hook that I could hide under the “web”.

(With or with out the web, Mr. Spider looks cute!)

I’m more a fan of cutesy Halloween decor and I think Mr. Spider fits right in.  Don’t you think our friends and neighbors will feel welcomed by Mr. Spider when they come to our home this Halloween season?  He just seems so friendly!

Thanks again ladies for allowing me to share my front door decor today.
Can’t wait to see what else is in store in the coming weeks!

I’d love for you all to come by the blog and say hi sometime!
Happy Halloween!
