Inside Out Mood Board

Jul82015 posted by Vanessa Brady 6 Comments

Inside-Out-Mood-Board-6Hi everyone, it’s Vanessa from Tried & True and I’m absolutely thrilled to be sharing this project with Eighteen25 during their Disney Week! I’ve had this Inside Out Mood Board floating around in my head ever since we saw the movie a few weeks ago. If you haven’t taken your kids to see it yet, I highly suggest you do so! Inside Out gives kids a really easy way to understand all those crazy emotions they have. Really, I can’t recommend this movie enough!

After we watched the movie, I knew I wanted to make some sort of chart for my boys to track and share their emotions. I had originally used only one hook in the center of the mood board but decided to add the two outside hooks so that we could talk about the multitude of emotions that can be felt at the same time (which is kinda the theme of the movie.) Personally, I like the way it looks with just one hook but this mood board is so much more educational with the other hooks as well!

Supplies:

  • Chalkboard Plaque
  • 4″ Wood Disks
  • Mod Podge
  • Command Strip Hooks

Step One. I used a chalkboard plaque as my base but you could also just use a wood plaque or empty frame. Transferring the letters to the board was easy with a bit of pencil graphite rubbed on the back of the words and then traced over the front. Fill in the letters with a white paint pen or chalk marker. Again, you don’t have to do it exactly the way I did, tracing paper or just freehand would work too!

Inside-Out-Mood-Board-3Step Two. Cut out the five characters from the free printable and glue with Mod Podge onto the 4″ wood discs. If you want to protect your discs from the ravages of your child’s emotions, add a few layers of Mod Podge to the surface. Word to the wise: my printer ink bled a bit when I layered the Mod Podge over the image. You might want to spray a light coat of sealant first.

Inside-Out-Mood-Board-4Step Three. Attach three Command strip hooks evenly spaced apart with enough room for the discs to hang. Depending on the age of your child, you might have to explain how sometimes it’s possible to feel one intense emotion or maybe the combination of a couple. Here’s a great chart talking about the overlap!

Inside-Out-Mood-Board-5I hope you and more importantly, your kids find this tutorial helpful! I hung this board up in my kids’ room a couple days ago and already my six year old has run out of his room in an emotional fit to show me a board with the Anger and Sadness characters on display. It helped him quantify his own feelings but it also completely melted my heart and gave me a visual representation of what my child was going through. Seriously, we’ll be using this Inside Out Mood Board for a long time!
