hand print snowman ornaments

Dec182010 posted by Jamie 44 Comments

One week till Christmas.
Can this really be right?  🙂
Well if your kids are home from school like ours are… maybe you are looking for a craft to try with them. These are the mini works of art we shared over at Ucreate with Kids.
Maybe you’ll give them a try if you haven’t already!

When my oldest was in second grade (she’s in 6th now) she made the cutest little ornament with her hand print. It was my favorite. Until it got broken. Thank goodness I got a picture of it.
We thought it would be fun to take that same idea and put it on a canvas. (Like a little work of art) And each year have the kids make a new one to see how their little hands have grown.

What you’ll need:
  • 2.5 x 3.5 white canvases (we bought a pack of 5 at Aaron Brothers)
  • acrylic paints
  • ribbon
  • paintbrushes
  • a fine tipped sharpie
  • and toothpicks (not pictured)
*********
first step: paint your canvas and let dry.

second step: lay your child’s hand in white paint and then press it onto the canvas. paint across the bottom of each little “snowman” to give them some ground to stand on.

third step: using the toothpicks… they can paint on eyes, carrot noses, hats, mouths, twig arms, scarves and if you want… snow.

fourth step: after they’re dry… hot glue a piece of ribbon onto the back so you can hang it on the tree. and don’t forget to write their name and date back there too with a sharpie.Hand print snowman kids ornaments Hand print snowman ornament Hand print snowman ornaments
I have a really hard time letting my kids do crafts all by themselves. 😉 But I LOVE how these turned out. Each one is cute in it’s own way.

I love this idea. LOVE it! I don't have any canvas but my husband has a garage full of wood so I think I'll improvise. Thanks for sharing this!

I did this project with my daughter and sent them off to the grandparents. LOVED this idea. I could not find the small canvases so I used small wood plaques instead. Thanks for the idea.

So strange! I opened my Google Reader and thought for a second that was my kid's art!

We just did this last week.

For the record, I'm pretty sure I originally got the idea from you, although later on, when I went to go reference the pictures so I could show my kids what I wanted, I couldn't find the site I had seen it on!

Anyways, so far everyone who has received them, LOVED them.

    Excellent idea!

These are adorable! I love your last comment about having a hard time letting your kids do crafts on their own…I'm the same way, it can be quite painful!! But, look how cute they turned out!
    Cheers!

I had my first graders make these using blue christmas balls instead. They turned out really cute! I sent them home with this poem:

    These aren't just five snowmen
    As anyone can see.
I made them with my hand
Which is a part of me.
Now each year when you trim the tree
    You'll look back and recall
    Christmas of 2010
When my hand was just this small!

I'm not sure where I got the original idea from, but they are a hit!

I teach Kindergarten and do these with my students on ornaments with their hands. There is a VERY cute poem that we attach to each ornament like a gift tag. It reads:
There aren't just 5 snowmen (or 4 in your craft),
    As anyone can see.
I made them with my hand,
Which is a part of me.
Now each year when you trim the tree,
    You'll look back and recall.
    Christmas of 2010,
When my hand was just this small!
