Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Ok, now let’s move onto Easter! 😉 I’ve had Easter on the brain for the last month or so–all that pastel goodness is so hard to resist! So today I’m sharing a super simple project perfect for your Easter table (or your everyday table): DIY Dip Dyed Placemats. And they require ZERO sewing! Awesome bonus, right? So, let’s just get right to it. Here’s how to make your own.

These DIY Dip Dyed placemats are SO cute and so easy to make!

You’ll Need:
Muslin (a yard or two)
Rit Dye
Hot Water
Scissors

1. Measure the size you want your placemats, cut a little notch in the fabric and then tear to get that raw, frayed edge. (Sorry, I know this picture isn’t great. Grab where the arrows point and tear). After you’ve torn, you can pull more of the strings out to give it a little more fray on the edges. Then I washed and dried my fabric.

2. Mix your dye. I have to admit, I’m not super scientific with the measurements. I basically filled a bowl with HOT water (the dye sets darker faster if it’s hot) and added some dye just by eyeballing it. You can add more if you want it darker, more water if you want it lighter–you get the gist. The more water, the lighter and more “watercolory” your color will be. Then just dunk your fabric in and lay the rest over the side and let it sit for a few minutes. It took me about two minutes on each end to get the color I wanted. Obviously, the longer it sits, the darker your color will be.

3. Then take it out–and here’s where, again, I’m not an expert: I just squeezed the excess dye out over the sink but I didn’t rinse it (in order to keep most of the dye in) and turned it over and dyed the other end. Once it was done, I put it in the dryer (still, no rinsing) to sort of set the dye. I’ll be washing these alone the first time around 😉

Once they were dry, I ironed them and set my table. I have to say, I’m IN LOVE with these. They were so simple and ended up exactly how I had pictured them in my head (which almost never happens). And, the fabric is so cheap and the process is so easy, you don’t have to worry about anyone ruining your nice linens at Easter dinner. Kids’ table anyone?
