[tips + tricks] the NEXT button

Aug42011 posted by Jamie 42 Comments

i’m a BIG fan of google reader (a little addicted maybe). but i missed seeing people’s actual blogs and if i wanted to leave a comment, i’d have to click over to the blog. a few months ago, i found out how to add the NEXT button to my bookmarks bar. it was instant love. it sits right up there with the amazing PIN IT button that i love almost as much. thought i’d share…

STEP ONE:

Googlereader01

STEP TWO:

Googlereader02

STEP THREE:

Googlereader03

then, instead of going to your google reader, just hit the NEXT button and it takes you to the most recently updated blog on your list. and if you’re like me, you’ll breath a sigh of relief when you see this message…

Googlereader04

as much as i love looking through blogs, it is a good feeling to know that i’ve made it to the end. and that no blog has gone unread. (for a few minutes, at least)

I use igoogle as my home page and have the google reader app on that. This displays all my unread blogs I follow in that window. Then when I'm short of time I can run through them quick and see if anything pops out if not mark them as all read. Or I go through them one at a time and read them in a window. Once read they come off this list. I can also mark them with a star on this list if I want to refer back to them.

That is my favorite reader tip. You can also add a 'note in reader' button for quick and easy sharing or to add tags to a post.

Ok, I am totally in LOVE with this tip! I forgot how much I was missing by not seeing everyone's beautiful headers and designs while reading directly from my Google Reader. Also so much easier to Pin this way! Thanks for sharing this tip!

This is a great tip! Thanks for sharing. I like how someone pointed out it makes pinning easier. And I won't have to click over from google reader for posts that don't show the whole thing in reader. Awesome!

Amazing! This is a great feature that I didn't even know existed! Thanks for posting about it! 🙂 My husband fixed me right up…we had to add a bar at the top to drag it to, but it worked! 🙂 Thanks!

That is awesome! Thanks for sharing this tip! I have not been using google reader for a while (so I didn't even know it had a place to click Pin It!) because I need to delete a few blogs so that I am not so overwhelmed with reading the ones I want to read. Have you been successful with deleting any that you are following? This seems to be a glitch with it, and it drives me crazy.

You just introduced me to google reader by this post! I put the NEXT button on my tool bar and I can tell that I am going to LOVE it, but I have been searching and can't figure out how to delete {or add} blogs?
Do you know anything about this?

Sheri – you can just click "follow" on most blogs and they'll show up in google reader, or you can click on the "add a subscription" button on the top left hand side of google reader and copy and paste the link. To unsubscribe – if you hover over a blog title (once it is added) on the left side of the page where it lists them, it will show a little arrow and if you click that it gives you choices like unsubscribe. Problem is (at least for me) that I am never actually unsubscribed – they always come back. Other than that, GR is great.
